A brief guide to summer in Sweden

The Scandinavian country of Sweden, bordered by the popular destinations of Denmark and Norway, is often overlooked by Brits seeking a summer destination.

However, with its beaches in the South, mountains in the North and vibrant cities sandwiched between, Sweden could well be next on your summer itinerary!

Beaches

Sweden’s south boasts glorious stretches of fine white sand beaches with rolling dunes.

For example, Sandhammaren Beach, located in East Skåne in the area of Österlen, has been coined “Sweden’s Tuscany”.

From Copenhagen Airport in Denmark, this location is less than an hour and half drive away.

Celebrations

Summer in Sweden comes alive with various celebrations of life, love and culture.

Among the most popular is the celebration on the eve of the summer solstice – Midsömmer – on the 21st June. Cherished traditions include dancing around a leaf-covered pole, decorating hair with flowers, drinking and music.

In the very North of Sweden, people celebrate the Midnight Sun phenomenon, as the sunlight lingers throughout the night.

Islands

Significant to Sweden’s landscape is its thousands of islands. A largely unknown but fascinating fact is that it is the country with the most islands.

Though many of the estimated 267,570 are uninhabited, some promise to be a glorious summer destination, isolated and surrounded by clear blue waters.

Many of these islands are located in the Stockholm archipelago, and so are just a short boat ride from the city centre – for example, Svartsö, which has hiking trails through meadows, rocky landscapes and forests.
