Madeira

A guide to Madeira in May

The Portuguese island of Madeira is an evergreen holiday destination and ideal for a long spring bank holiday break. Throughout the month of May, it offers pleasant Atlantic temperatures and the perfect backdrop for its annual Flower Festival.

There are plenty of activities for energetic visitors, and these include hikes between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, as well as the picturesque East coastal trail along the PR8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço. Football fans are in for a treat too, with Madeira’s most famous son Cristiano Ronaldo looming large at attractions across the island.

Elsewhere, you can slip off into the historic forest outside the capital, which is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the capital, Funchal, you might want to try the island’s famous Madeira wine – although perhaps not just before sliding down the hill on one of the island’s most entertaining forms of transport. The iconic street ‘Carreiro’ toboggans are deftly guided by two drivers and offer a uniquely exhilarating experience.

Fans of the island’s architecture will similarly be entranced by the thatched Santana houses, with their distinctive designs and unique heritage.

Madeira is packed with charm and is an ideal location to take a special someone for a long break. There is a lot to see, and you will be spoilt for choice across the island. This is where a travel expert can help you prepare the weekend of a lifetime.
