A scuba diver’s guide to the Caribbean

The Caribbean is infamous for its long stretches of white sands, vibrant culture and grand boat cruises, but what lies beneath the surface of its shores is a wealth of bustling life to be explored.

Whether you are an eager beginner or a diving-pro, the Caribbean’s islands boast an array of sites – from deep wrecks to plummeting walls, or simply wading in from the shore.

Here are some of the top islands for divers to visit, and what each has to offer.

Tiger sharks in The Bahamas

While not for the faint hearted, if you are an adrenaline-seeker, Tiger Beach in The Bahamas could be your next dive spot. As a gold-star dive location, it is also perfect for first-time divers.

Cayman Islands: USS Kittiwake wreck and stingrays

Known as one of the best wrecks in the Caribbean, the USS Kittiwake is a wreck in Grand Cayman resting at 19m, but accessible for all at its top at 4m. “Stingray City” is also a Cayman hotspot where divers and snorkelers can immerse themselves among masses of stingrays over sandy banks.

Caves, wrecks and deep dives in the Dominican Republic

Known for the renowned sites of Bayahibe, Paradise Reef and Airport Wall, the Dominican Republic is one of the most loved dive locations within the Caribbean. At 13m, beginners can explore the Atlantic Princess wreck, while divers with deep-dive certification can submerge 36m to the St. George.
