Skies clear up for Northern Italy
The popular travel destinations of Florence and Pisa were recently included in cities under a red alert, as flooding and landslides hit Northern Italy.
A red alert indicates a serious risk level of flooding with extreme and widespread affect.
Last Friday morning, there was a persistent torrential downpour in Florence that amounted to nearly a month’s worth of rainfall. Across 6 hours of that morning, 53mm of rain was recorded, following a further 36mm that had fallen overnight.
Bologna also reported to have experienced landslides last week, with residents having been evacuated Thursday evening. Local media has reported rescues in Bologna due to the landslides it faced.
As a result of the warnings and flooding, schools across Tuscany in over 60 municipalities were also closed last week, in addition to a number of universities – particularly the campuses of the University of Florence.
Fortunately, the worst of the rain is said to have passed, with no casualties reported. Quick action meant residents at risk could relocate, and flood defences were also placed along the River Arno in Pisa. Some residents were advised against travel due to disruptions to roads, such as flooding and fallen trees causing a partial closure to the A1.
