Scottish Highlands

New Year summer plans: places to travel in Scotland

Right on the doorstep of England, Scotland is often overlooked as a top summer destination. With its lakes, mountains, historical cities and thriving culture, there truly is something for everyone. Here are my top Scotland highlights.

Edinburgh

As Scotland’s capital, this iconic city is a hub of wondrous architecture, art, food and drink. If you visit during the month of August, you can expect the city to become alive with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in which venues for theatre, comedy and music pop up in their hundreds.

Isle of Skye

Known as a bucket list location, this dramatic island is landscaped by rocky peaks and ridges, waterfalls and wildlife. If you are seeking some beauty away from the city, this could be your dream destination.

Fort William

If you are seeking the most out of your Scottish adventure, such as kayaking, biking and hiking, then this town at the base of Ben Nevis could be perfect for you.

How to travel around Scotland

Bus

One of the best ways to appreciate the landscape of Scotland is by travelling by bus, so you can take in as much (or as little) as the sights as you like.

Train

Another scenic, stress-free option is to take one of the picturesque rail routes Scotland offers over lochs, on brides and through mountains.

Car

If you want the freedom to be able to explore and move on when you please, as well as access some of the harder to reach spots, then travelling via car is for you. You can either hire one or take your own.

When to go to Scotland

Despite a changeable climate year-round, the driest and warmest months in Scotland typically run from May to September.

At Emma Latham Travel, I offer bespoke travel packages that can help you make the most of The Highlands – so you can start your journey stress-free this summer.
